1. What is Cycle Tracks?
CycleTracks is a data collection effort run by The Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG) to develop a planning tool that will help make the Monterey Bay Area an even better place to bike. This tool will assist local governments in identifying the best places to plan for new bicycle routes throughout the tri-county region. AMBAG has partnered with the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) on the CycleTracks phone applications.
2. What areas are covered by the Cycle Tracks project?
CycleTracks for the Monterey Bay Area covers Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz counties.
3. Why should I help?
Helping us will provide planners and local governments a better understanding of what factors influence the routes that Monterey Bay Area cyclists use.
4. Why does the phone app say San Francisco, I thought this was for the Monterey Bay Area?
You’ve found the correct app! The application was developed by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA). Rather than developing our own Monterey Bay Area-branded application, SFCTA has very generously allowed us to use their app. All information collected will be sent to AMBAG.
5. If I make the same trip every day, do I need to enter the route more than once?
If you ride the exact same route, there is no need to show us more than once. However, if you use different variations of the same trip please log them.
6. Can I enter a trip that I took last month?
No, using the phone app only allows you to log trips as they occur.
7. Why do I have to enter my demographic information?
Research has shown that different types of people use different routes, and that biking for exercise is really different from biking for groceries or commuting. Demographic information goes a long way toward helping us understand how people bicycle in the Monterey Bay Area. You have the choice of opting out of entering any personal info, but we hope you will since it just takes a few seconds and will be kept completely confidential.
8. What about privacy issues?
We will respect your privacy, but we want to learn from the data too. What does that mean? To us, that means:
9. Will you publish your research findings? Can you give us more details about this research?
Yes! We will be compiling the findings in a final report. All information collected will be aggregated so as not to reveal any personal information of participants in the report. The final report will be available at AMBAG.org.
